Let's Go Downtown for Some Tacos!

Yes, you can get some decent tacos on the Westside, but let's take a trip downtown for the good stuff. I'm talking about handmade tortillas like the abuelas do it, meat from the smoker, and fresh Mexican cheese. The simpler, the better. Why? Because simple is really hard, but these folks make it look easy and taste amazing. Go to these taquerias and experience the best tacos that Downtown LA has to offer...

  • Bar Amá. Chef Josef Centeno is a San Antonio native who has Mexican-American down to an art form. Get the puffy tacos with shrimp or carne guisada.

  • Sonoratown. Jennifer Feltham and Teodoro Diaz-Rodriguez have a way with Sonoran tacos. Two words: carne asada.

  • Tacos 1986. Victor Delgado and Jorge Alvarez own this place and they are at Smorgasburg. They cater, too. Guac and homemade corn tortillas. I'd do a comparison of the carne asada to Sonoratown. Let us know what you prefer.

  • Guerrilla Tacos. This is no secret. Chef Wes Avilla has been charming our tastebuds for a long time and if you haven't tasted his talent yet, you're going to kick yourself for time wasted. Hello soft-shell crabs!

Okay, so you want one closer to the Westside? Here's your spot:

  • Loqui. Located in the Platform development close to the Metro stop. Get extra salsa seca, because you're going to want to put it on everything.

There you go...five taquerias worthy of your time and taste buds. Want to cook at home? We understand and recommend the cookbook "L.A. Mexicano" which includes recipes and stories about the people who built L.A.'s Mexican food scene, and of course "Guerrilla Tacos: Recipes from the Streets of L.A." because you know that's going to be good, but not as good as going there.
